Sleep — Your Brain’s Nightly Cleanup

The glymphatic system, CBT-I, sleep hygiene, and supplements that support real recovery.

While you sleep, your brain runs a cleanup system called the glymphatic system. It’s like a dishwasher. Toxic proteins (including tau and amyloid) accumulate during the day. At night, your brain flushes them out. When you don’t sleep enough, this cleanup doesn’t happen. A 2019 Science study found that tau levels rose 50% or more when people were kept awake.

What to focus on

  • 7–8 hours per night
  • Get checked for sleep apnea (it’s common and fixable)
  • Consistent sleep schedule (same bedtime and wake time)
  • Dark, cool, quiet room
  • Dim lights in the evening
  • Watch your eating timing (no large meals close to bed)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)

If sleep is a real problem, CBT-I is the gold standard. It works better than sleep medications long-term. Find a provider:

Supplements for sleep support

  • Magnesium glycinate and L-threonate: A 2010 MIT study found magnesium L-threonate crossed the blood-brain barrier and improved memory. A 2024 randomized trial found it improved sleep quality. See: 2010 study and 2024 RCT
  • L-theanine: Promotes relaxation without sedation
  • GABA: Calms the nervous system
  • Herbal support: Valerian, passionflower, lemon balm
Think of it this way. Sleep is not downtime. It’s the one shift per day when your brain can clear the dishes. Skip it and the sink keeps filling.
